Frequently Asked Questions

"SO WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT? WILL THIS REALLY WORK FOR ME?"

If you DO the work, it WILL work!

This digital method book offers a clear, step-by-step process that uses simple routines to keep you practicing right at the limit of your abilities, pushing it a little further each day. Through this system of organized practice, you will be able to discover for yourself how to play the saxophone as efficiently as possible, so that you are technically prepared to play anything!

The Systematic Approach is divided into three parts:
In chapter one, the basic routine structure is established, which utilizes breathing calisthenics (both with and without the horn) and daily exercises to regularly revisit and refine your entire practical range. The goal is to build a foundation in the first two and a half octaves by learning to control air speed and tongue level, such that all of these notes can be played easily. In addition, how to produce any of these pitches with all possible fundamental fingerings is addressed (i.e., the overtone series of every fingering). This is so you can better understand, from a theoretical and experiential perspective, how the saxophone functions as an acoustic instrument.

A strong, controlled sound in EVERY register is the main goal with this method!

Chapter two advances to more complex harmonic exercises, and the process of "discovering" the Top Tones (F#3 to C5) begins. As more notes are discovered, they are added to the range studies and connected with the lower registers, the goal of which is to increase confidence in their application, and help the student get into the habit of treating them just like any other note on the horn. By the time this material is digested, a consistent four-octave range is achievable.

The final chapter continues to build on the foundation of the previous two, and is where the effort put into the previous exercises, especially the breathing calisthenics, really begins to prove its worth. It deals with how to reach the fifth octave, and build your practical range as far as you care to go from there.

This method is something that I apply in my daily practice, and I've found it extremely helpful, so it is my sincerest hope is that you will find this is as beneficial as I have!
"I HAVEN'T PLAYED IN A LONG TIME. I DON'T THINK I'M READY FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS."

If your saxophone skills have gotten a bit rusty of late, then this would be an excellent place to start building them back up.

The most important thing we have to develop as saxophonists is our sound, and to do so it is necessary to start at the most basic point;

Learning to produce and control the "fundamental" pitches, then the first, and subsequent overtones. This is something that every saxophone student can and should practice, at any stage of development.

After a few months of regular practice, you will start feeling more in control of your sound than ever before.
"I CAN'T READ MUSIC"

Some ability to read standard music notation is a requirement to get the benefits out of this method, simply because is it the most efficient way to put musical information in writing.

However, if you are still unable to read music, this eBook provides an excellent opportunity to develop this skill, for one reason; 95% of the exercises are simple, and easily memorizable.

As you progress through the method, you'll start to see the logical progression of each lesson and chapter as they build on one another. This will also help to reinforce your reading skills, as you see the same notes over and over, in slightly different contexts.
"FIVE OCTAVES? THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WHISTLE! WHAT'S THE POINT?"

The subtitle, "Five Octave Range", denotes a possibility for anyone interested in really pushing the limits of their saxophone technique. "Unlimited Range" could just as accurately be the subtitle.

Depending on your goals, or even the instrument/setup you are playing, you may decide that three and a half or four octaves is plenty, and there is no need to go further. But, wherever you stop, you can be sure that those notes will be just as easy for you to play as the the low and middle registers!
"THERE'S MORE TO THE SAXOPHONE THAN JUST BEING ABLE TO PLAY HIGH NOTES."

A lot more, in fact. And while many people find that one of the benefits of this system is greater ability to play in the altissimo register, this is not a "high-note method".

It is a saxophone tone production method.

Even if you have no interest in playing anything above high F#, the exercises in this eBook will greatly improve the quality and control of the instrument's so-called basic range.

The ultimate outcome of working with this method, is that playing anything on the saxophone will feel easier, meaning significantly more enjoyment when making music.
"PLAYING THE SAXOPHONE CAN NEVER BE EFFORTLESS."

It's true that we have to exert some physical effort (or "force") to make a sound on the saxophone.

But the sensation of playing the saxophone can be effortless, and that is the real objective of this method, whether or not your personal goals include a spectacular high register.

When you're able to play effortlessly, then you're free to focus on developing your musicianship on the saxophone, without technical limitations holding you back.

"ALTISSIMO IS TOO ADVANCED FOR ME."

And there is a good reason why many saxophonists feel that playing high notes is "hard";

When we start out with the saxophone, by the time all of the notes from Low Bb to the palm keys are learned, there are strong associations between each note and which fingers press certain keys.

Naturally, when the altissimo register is introduced, the first question we ask is "what fingering do I use?".

But what we rarely study is why each fingering works!

By the time we start working with the saxophone's harmonic series, we are already "fingering-dependent" and may have a number a habits ingrained that are stumbling blocks for us to easily play the saxophone's full range.

From the very first page, this method will teach you how to intuitively understand and control the acoustics of the saxophone, so that there are no "hard" notes.

No matter where you are in your development as a saxophonist, the exercises in this eBook will help you to improve your sound.

"WILL THIS BOOK HELP ME TO BE A BETTER IMPROVISER, OR CONCERT SAXOPHONIST?

The goal of this method is to teach how to play the saxophone, which is a different objective than playing music.

So, there are no specific exercises aimed at learning a specific style of music in this eBook.

As you work through this material, you will develop a greater degree of control of the instrument, which will allow you to freely express yourself in whatever genre of music you choose.

Most importantly, whatever challenges you face while improving your musicianship in a certain type of music, you can be confident that you won't be fighting with the saxophone to get it to do what you want!
